  • More information about Amethyst

To the Egyptians, Amethyst was seen as the mark of great royalty, its deep purple symbolizing the power of pharaohs. A favourite among the pharaohs, it was thought to protect the wearer from evil and misfortune. A bracelet with a large amethyst scarab was among the treasures found in Tutankhamun's tomb.

To the Christians of the Middle Ages, Amethyst’s deep purple color represented the suffering of Christ’s blood. It was used to bring about spiritual purification. In the Old Testament, amethyst was one of the twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel.

Finally, to the ancient Chinese, Amethyst represented the door to the dreamworld. By setting it by your pillow, it allowed you to have beautiful, vivid dreams.

The ancient Greek legend tells us Dionysus, the God of wine & son of Zeus, was eating his grapes on Mount Olympus and grew furious from an insult he heard from mere mortals calling him a lazy boar. He was eager to punish one of them to satisfy his rage. He created a pride of fierce tigers to exact his revenge on the next mortal that crossed his path. As he went across the lands, the first person he found was a young, gentle virgin named Amethyst. She was on her way to the temple to worship the goddess Diana. Amethyst called out to Diana for protection against the wild tigers. The goddess immediately turned Amethyst into a beautiful white crystal to protect her, and the tigers ran away. Dionysus wept tears of wine in remorse at the sight of the beautiful statue. The God's tears stained the quartz purple, creating the gem we know today. The peace which that young woman named Amethyst had in the face of Dionysus’s rage still glows in the Amethyst crystal to this day.

Psychics, mediums, & other divination practitioners hold Amethyst’s worth in high regard. They often decorate sacred altars & spaces with the beautiful stone.
